Battle of Cambrai. Gouy. 84 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. 7 October 1918.
Cambrai is a city on the River Scheldt in France. The city was occupied in 1914 and remained in German hands throughout the war. Battle of Cambrai, 8-9 October 1918 was the continuation of the advance eastward now that the Hindenberg Line had been breached. The operation was a success and the city was captured by Canadian troops.
The Brigade operated medium calibre howitzers and were deployed close to the front line. They had been in action during the assault on the Hindenberg line at Brolcourt when they were giving covering fire for the 30 American Division. At the beginning of October 1918 the Brigade was in action during the advance at Beaurevoir. On 8 October they were at Gouy and then went forward to positions to the south of Maretz for the Battle of Cambrai 8-10 October 1918.
