Richebourg – Givenchy sector. 1 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. 9 August 1915.
At the outbreak of war the battalion was stationed at Malta. They returned to England and landed at Zeebrugge on 7 October 1914. The battalion had been heavily engaged during First Ypres and the British Spring offensives at Neuve Chapelle and Battle of Festubert, 15 – 25 May 1915. During June and July they had remained around Festubert and Richbourg D’Avoue alternating with time at the front and in billets in the rear area. On the 1 August they moved to the rear area and went into billets at Busnes, about 13kms north west of Bethune, where they remained until 17 August when they returned to front line duties.
Men on the Gates – William Coulson died of exhaustion at No 6 CCS at Lilliers, no other details are known as to the circumstances.
