Bailleul-Sir-Berthoult. 1 Bn Cheshire Regiment. 8 May 1917.
At the beginning of May 1917 the 1 Bn Cheshire Regiment were employed on working parties and were in camps at Maison Blanche and, from 4 May at Roclincourt. At 9.00am on the 8 May the battalion was put at readiness and moved off 2 hours later into the line at Bailleul. They were to be in support for an attack by 95 Brigade at Fresnoy and Oppy. They formed up with A & B Coys in the line north from Bailleul-Sir-Berthoult and with C and D Coys along the railway west of Bailleul and up to Farbus Wood. That evening there was much shelling with many gas shells falling near to the railway and Farbus Wood. Casualties were ORs 4 KIA. The attack by 95 Brigade went ahead early on the 9 May.
