Wancourt. 1/5 Bn Cheshire Regiment. 9 May 1917
The 1/5 Bn Cheshire Regiment was a pioneer unit. Although trained as combat soldiers their main function was working on constructing trenches, defences, roads and other infrastructure. During the first half of May 1917 the battalion was in the area in front of Arras around Tilloy, Monchy and Wancourt. They were working by companies mainly on digging communication, support and front line trenches. They were also constructing bath houses and latrines in Arras and salvaging equipment. Casualties for the period 1-15 May were – ORs 7 KIA, 58 wounded and 4 missing.
