LEG STREET  From foot of Albion Hill  and its juction with Beatrice Street Leg Street runs down to Black Gate. The old town walls, built 1270s  and demolished after 1644 siege once had four toll gates – Black Gate and Willow Gate being built first and New Gate and Beatrice Gate came later.

9 Private 10763, Bertie Annum, 5 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Born Liverpool before adoption to new family in Foundry Yard then 2 Whip Lane (Osbaston), and Heath Wain Cottage Knockin and later boarding in Oswestry 9, Leg Street, a fruiterer’s owned by Catherine Leeke, where Bertie was a live in errand boy. Later worked for J Boffey, Butcher.

 

LIVERPOOL ROAD Developed for housing in the 1900’s so called because it is above the underground aqueduct taking water from Lake Vrynwy to Liverpool

42 Second Lieutenant BR Corley Rogers, 3 Bn Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment),  Benjamin’s parents lived here in 1911.

 

LLOYD STREET   Developed at end of 19th beginning 20th century;  until 1970 1-13 Lloyd Street were part of Gatacre Road No 15  was 1 Lloyd Street.  (Angelsey Terrace built 1901 formerly part of Gatacre Road  after 1970  1-13 Lloyd Street). Meltham Villas are now 25-31 Lloyd Street.

Meltham Villas   Second Lieutenant BR Corley Rogers, 3 Bn Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).  Also at Oswald Road and  Liverpool Road.

31 Sergeant 12269 Alfred R Smith,6 Bn Shropshire Light Infantry. and  Private 202054 Frederick S Smith, 11 Bn Manchester Regiment.      Born in Bakewell, Derbyshire in Oswestry lived at 10 Gatacre Place & 1 Swan Crescent.

 

LLWYN ROAD  Developed in the 1860s

1 Private 33126 Samuel Overton, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry attch 83 Field Coy. Royal Engineers.

see also 41 Llwyn Road. Born Rushall Staffordshire brought up in Shrewsbury.

2 Private 11488 Harry Wright, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry,  Born Selattyn, Hengoed. Mother’s address   she also lived at Park Terrace, Whittington Road.

3 Private 6308 Samuel Hall, 1 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born Whixall. Also lived Parry’s buildings, Castle Street.

6 Lance Sergeant 200208 Stanley O Jones, 1 /4 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.

27 Sergeant 718 Henry Tudor, 4 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Also lived at Middleton Road and Coney Green

31 Private 11882 William Watkins, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, Also lived at Orchard Street. & Selattyn Road

41 Private 33126 Samuel Overton, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry attch 83 Field Coy. Royal Engineers. Family home & later after marriage he lived  at No.1.

42 Private 12273 Frank E Jordan, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. 1911 and at Prince Street in 1901

49 (Acting) Lance Sergeant 12280 Alfred E Roberts, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry    Born in Rochdale. Living here 1911 had lived at Swan Crescent, Cripplegate.

Llwyn House     Private 73090 Cyril Jones, 9 Bn Royal Fusiliers.   This could be 49 Llwyn Road given that on the 1901 census is after 47 Llwyn Road  possibly same house as Alfred Roberts above1901.  Also at Morda.

 

LLEWELLYN TERRACE, Llwyn Road 10 dwellings at foot of Llwyn Road

6  Private 39395 Bertie Cross, 16 Bn Lancashire Fusiliers. Moved to Manchester. His mother and father lived at Upper Lord Street

 

Llys House   See Middleton Road

 

LLYS LANE  Would become known as Middleton Road

Bay Villa      Private 12329 Harry Beaton, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  In 1911 his widowed mother at 12 Vyrnwy Road, Oswestry now a widow Father/husband died March 1908.

3  Private 10829 George Albert  Corbett, 1/4Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  Also at Llwyn Place, Albert Road & Castle Street.

Hughes Yard   3 Brothers lived here in 1891  Once stood after 5 Middleton Road demolished in 1960s

Lance Corporal 18228 Robert M Hughes, 1 Bn Lancashire Fusiliers.  Also lived at Upper Church Street

Rifleman 7015 John W  Hughes, 3 Bn Rifle Brigade.  Also lived at Chapel Place, Chapel Street and Beatrice Street.

Private 9508 David E Hughes, 2 Bn South Staffordshire Regiment. Also lived at Upper Church Street & Orchard Street.

 Private 26265 Thomas Jones, 1 Bn Cheshire Regiment.  Also at Parry’s Buildings, Castle Street and Swan Crescent.

 

Llwyn Place see Albert Road

 

LORD STREET  Built in early 1880s took in Portland Place. Cul-de-sac off Castle Street it is separted from Upper Lord Street by Oak Street car park.

LORNE STREET Built in 1880 sometimes called Lorne Terrace, Albert Road

19 Private 26599 John R Bebb, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Also lived New Park Road

25 Lance Corporal 24296 Albert Davies, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.   Home after his marriage also lived at Vine Cottages and Castle Place, Chapel Street.

35 Deck Hand 19056DA(Po) John O Thomas, Royal Naval Reserve. HM Coastal Motor Boat 25.

 

LOWER BROOK STREET Road below the  junction with Church Street  runs towards Victoria Street and on to Shrewsbury Road

‘New Cottage’     Lance Corporal 9336 James Bayley, 4 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.  Also at Salop Road

11 Private 35360 Richard T Coleman, 25 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.   Born in Llansilin.  His widowed mother lived here.
