No positive identification can be made. One clue is his listing on St Oswald’s Church War Memorial as King’s Royal Rifles. The best candidate for this is –
Rifleman 9055 John (William) Hughes, 3 Bn King’s Royal Rifle Corp. 22 May 1917, Mikra British Cemetery. Kalamaria, (CWGC)
He was born in 1893 at New Ferry, Bebbington, Cheshire. At the outbreak of war he was a serving soldier and went over to France on 20 December 1914 and then to Salonika in December 1915. He was KIA at on 22 May 1917 and is buried at Mikra British Cemetery. Kalamaria.
Shropshire Roll of Honour gives this man as
Lance Corporal 2000505 John Hughes 1/4 Bn KSLI. KIA 24 August 1918, Chocques Military Cemetery. (CWGC)
