Charles Clifford Judge was born at Crewe on 11 June 1896. He was the third and youngest child of Frederick and Louisa Judge with elder siblings Edward and Gertrude. In 1901 they were living at 212 Hungerford Road, Crewe. His mother, Louisa, died in 1908. In August 1910 Charles began an apprenticeship as a boiler maker with London and North Western Railway. Also working for LNW were his father as an engine fitter and brother as an engine cleaner. In 1911 the family had moved to 45 Underwood Lane, Crewe. By the time of the war Charles’ father was living at 42 York Street, Oswestry. Charles is named on the Cambrian Railways Memorial – employed as a boiler maker. In January 1915 he left LNW railways – it is probable that he had left to join up. He enlisted at Oswestry joining the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He went over to France on 2 October 1915 as a draft and was posted to A Company 5 Bn KSLI. Charles was KIA on 24 August 1916 at Delville Wood during the Somme Offensive. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial and has no known grave. He is also commemorated at St Oswald’s Church, and on Cambrian Railways Memorial, Oswestry.
