Leonard Probert was born at Oswestry in 1897. His mother was Sarah Probert, later Davies. No other details about his early life can be found. At the time of the war his mother was living at Dark Cottages, Salop Road, she would later move to 1 Swan Lane. Leonard worked for Messrs Dodd & Company. He enlisted at Oswestry, probably in 1915 when he turned 18 years old and went over to France in 1916 – he was not awarded the 1915 Star. He was KIA on 17 July 1916 at Bazentin Ridge during the Somme Offensive. His body was lost and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He is also commemorated at St Oswald’s Church, Oswestry.
