Evan Arthur Humphreys was born on 15 May 1891. His parents were Griffith and Jane Humphreys; his father was a pig dealer. His parents married in 1878. Evan and Arthur was the youngest of their 7 children: Thomas, George, Urusula, Ellias, Hannah, and Harriet. The family lived at Fitzalan Court, Arthur Street off Willow Street, Oswestry and, by the end of the war, his parents were living at 6 Castle Place, Chapel Street. Arthur worked as a labourer, he was unmarried. He enlisted in December 1915, probably a conscript and joining the Coldstream Guards and was posted to 1 battalion. He likely went over to France in 1916 but there are few details of his military service. Evidence suggests he was wounded at least once and returned to the front. He seems to have survived the war. Arthur died from pneumonia on 18 February at Oswestry – he was likely a victim of the post war influenza epidemic, weakened by his wound. He was buried at Oswestry Cemetery on 22 February 1919, his headstone reads ‘You must be born again, John 3.7’, chosen by his mother.
