NOTE. This man has no known connection to Oswestry and is the best candidate.
Timothy Lloyd was born in 1883 at Dudley, Worcestershire. He was the eldest surviving child of 8 children of Thomas and Mary Lloyd. They lived at Kate’s Hill, Dudley. His father worked as a coal miner, as did 2 of his brothers. He, along with another brother, worked as a stonebreaker in the nearby dolerite quarry. It is possible he came to Oswestry as a quarryman, however, when enlisting he gave his residence as Dudley, where he also enlisted, probably in 1915. He joined the Worcestershire R and was posted to 1 Battalion. It is not known when he went over to France. His battalion was a regular army unit and had been at the Western Front since 1914, he must have been a draft. He was KIA on 4 March 1917 during an attack on enemy positions around Bouchavesnes and Moislains on the Somme. The battalion had over 200 casualties, most due to enemy artillery fire. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He is also commemorated on Dudley War Memorial and at St John the Evangelist, Kate’s Hill, Dudley.
