Ypres Town. 94 Field Coy Royal Engineers. 3 May 1917
During the last 2 weeks of April 1917 the 94 Field Company Royal Engineers had been in billets at Fletre, France, about 30km south west of Ypres. There they had spent the time training and on drills – in particular they had been working on knotting and lashing and construction of strong points. At the end of the month they marched via Vlamertinge to Ypres where they went into billets. They would spend the next weeks at Ypres, moving each night to work in the forward area. This was during the build up to the Third Ypres Offensive and the construction of roads, railways, tracks for men and pack animals as well as new trench systems. communications trenches. assembly points, gun emplacements and all the infrastructure needed to keep the Offensive going. The weather was hot and clear meaning there was good observation of the rear area and there was frequent shelling, including the company’s billets. On the 3 May the War Diary records ‘very heavy shelling of billets’ – 2 ORs were KIA – Lance Corporal Jones and Private 39240 F Powell (CWGC).
