GASWORKS COTTAGES Cottages backing onto Oswestry Gas Works. The Gas works were built in 1842, by Richard Roberts, at the end of Victoria Road. Before this the gasworks had been in Willow Street.

Private 60745 Isaac Roberts, 14 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.  Born in Oswestry he would work in Hugglescote, Liecestershire & Shottaton, Flintshire coalfields. In Oswestry lived at  Cambrian Square and Vine Cottages, Albert Road and Gas Works Cottages. His widow and child lived at Gate Street, Oswestry.

 

GATACRE PLACE, Brynhafod Road  built 1840s

8  Corporal 17414, Poole, Walter W., 4 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  Place of death. Walter had  also lived at Albert Road and HADLEY.

10  Sergeant 12269 Alfred R Smith,6 Bn Shropshire Light Infantry.  and Private 202054 Frederick S Smith, 11 Bn Manchester Regiment.    Bothers born in Bakewell also 1 Swan Crescent, Cripplegate, Oswestry.

Gatacre House, (Gatacre Place) built 1840’s

Second Lieutenant AC Edwards, 6 Bn, attached 7 Bn, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Home of his aunt and family.

 

GATACRE ROAD initially ran from Lloyd Street & Caer Road  to Liverpool Road

4  Private 12352 Harry H (Heritage) Owen, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. also Coney Green

5 Private 49724 Frederick O Ellis, 2 Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.  Here in 1911 had lived on West Street. Parents after the war at Ferrers Road.

7 Private 22357 Christopher R Williams, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  Also lived on Albert Road.

 

GATE STREET  At the end of Beatrice Street built 1860s and demolished 1960s

2 Sapper 159134 Alfred W Miller, 123 Field Company Royal Engineers.

12 Private 17549 Herbert Price, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, Also lived at Beatrice Street.

17 Home of Arthur Roberts (1923) partner to John Griffiths father of Private 203047 John Griffiths, 4 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. the partnership and traded as Griffiths & Roberts (Corn Merchants), 28 Oswald Road in 1923 they filed for bankruptcy.

23 Sergeant 200900 John J Phillips, 9 Bn. Royal Welsh Fusiliers.    Shop run by his widowed mother had  also lived at 1 Gate Street in 1901. After his marrigage in at Rhosymedre running Plough Hotel.

27 Private 22989 William Elcock, 20 Bn The King’s (Liverpool Regiment). Also lived at Hengoed.

32 Corporal, 10910 Jack Roberts, 19 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. 1914? father of brothers also at Gronwen

37 Private 11882 William Watkins, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, CWGC gives mother of living at Gate Street.

40 Private 31070 Arthur Clare, 2 Bn South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers).   Living as a boarder with his widowed father. Also Victoria Terrace, Albert Road, Cripplegate and Castle Street.

45 Private 12306 Andrew Price, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Obituary 1917 wife 5 children. also at St Martins / Bignall End Staffs/ Sunny Bank.

 

GITTINS STREET Built in 1880s  extended in 1930s more recently known as Gittin Street

13 Second Lieutenant Charles A (Albert) Davies, 7 Bn South Wales Borderers.   Census 1911 as a boarder, Railway Clerk, Also at Vine Cottages, Albert Road & Castle Street.

25 Private 15749 William H Lewis, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.     Also at Rope Walk

Lieutenant Frederick H Davies, 10 Bn Canadian Infantry. Also lived at Holbache Road and 8 Olwen Terrace Chapel Street 1901

 

GOBOWEN ROAD  As the name suggests the road leading from Oswestry to Gobowen and Llangollen, North Wales

‘Hafodig’   Lance Corporal 13873 Percy W Miner, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Also lived at 35 Castle Street  and Orchard Street

 Ceiriog Villas  Built in1900 now 3-9 Gobowen Road  to Llwyn Stores

3  Private 15907 Clement Priestly (Priestley), 2 Bn East Yorkshire Regiment.    Born in Halifax. Home of Mrs M A Danks,his mother,  3 Ceiriog Villas.

7  Private 355357 John A Richards, 25 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.  Born Llansilin. The family lived for a time on  a farm in Llynclys before moving to Oswestry and living at Beatrice Street.
