Cricket
In 1915 Oswestry Cricket was disbanded as players enlisted in the forces. After the War the Club was re-constitued. A meeting was held in the Memorial Hall, Oswestry with the invitation to ‘All interested in Cricket’. it was well attended and the vote was unanminous. A Grounds sub Committee would investigte if they could use their old ground and funding was discussed. The main movers and proposers were Mr WD Thomas, Mr WK Minshall, George Whitfield.
Second Lieutenant Gilbert R Venables, 3 Bn posted to 2 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He played cricket for Shropshire, Herefordshire and the MCC as a middle order batsman and bowler. He was also a good golfer, Captain of Oswestry Golf Club and represented Shropshire Gentlemen, and was a gold and silver medal winner in the Bar Golf Championships.
Second Lieutenant (William) Norman Thomas, Royal Flying Corps, 27 Squadron. Norman also played hockey and was a good skier.
Private 12329 Harry Beaton, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Harry played cricket & football for Holy Trinity Church Club.

Private 22357 Christopher R Williams, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Christopher was a footballer and played as a forward for Oswestry United FC in the Lancashire Combination league.
Corporal 13868 Percy Broster, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Percy was a prominent member of the Oswestry United Football Club.

Sapper 62361 Austin Ledwith, Royal Engineers 13 Divisional Signal Coy (Telegraphist).
Lance Corporal 9336 James Bayley, 4 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers, James was a gymnastics instructor for Oswestry Corporation.
Hockey
Both George Blake and Norman Thomas played for Shropshire County XI.
Second Lieutenant George V (Victor) Blake, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.

Private 17094 Warren A Ash, 7 Bn Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment), H Coy. Warren was a keen sportsman, played football (rugby) and tennis and in 1913 became secretary of the Chilliwack Lawn Tennis Club.
