Armentières is a town in northern France on the border with Belgium and about mid-way between Bethune and Ypres. The Western Front was about 6kms east of the town. The main actions fought were the Battle of Armentieres in 1914 during the ‘Race to the Sea’ and during the 1918 German Spring Offensive (Kaiser Offensive) when the town was saturated in mustard gas.

A German warning notice on the door of a ruined building reading – “Armentieres is a mustard gas area”. (IWM Q 23792)
