UPPER BROOK STREET Both Upper and Lower Brook Street have exsisted since the 18th century. Water once flowed from Oswald’s Well down the street and across Church Street, where there was a bridge at the Coach an Dogs to cross the stream.

2   Private 4424 Horace Cadman, 1 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.   Born in Wolverhampton. The family moved to Wellington Somerset then to Oswestry.  His father, a cycle maker, ran a shop from their home on Upper Brook Street.

25    Lieutenant, Philip E (Edmund) Sharples, 9 Bn York and Lancaster Regiment.    Born Blackburn.

28  Captain Herbert MB Lawford, 9 Bn Royal Fusiliers (City of London Rgt).  Also lived at ‘Trewern’, Hengoed

53   Private 9719 Bert White, 1 Bn Kings Shropshire Light Infantry.    Born Oswestry lived for a time with grandparents at Chirk Mill. His mother remarried and lived on Linenhall  Street Chester

56   Private 160690 Edward Thomas, Shropshire Yeomanry attch. 1 Bn Cheshire Regiment.       Living here in 1901  and also lived at Arthur Street.

57 (58)  Private 24036 Edward Jones, 11 Bn Leicestershire Regiment (Pioneers).

‘Gables’   Chief Mate Mercantile Marine Barnard C Spaull, SS Royal Edward.    ‘Bryntirion’ Morda Road. After his marriage ‘Thistlehurst’, Queen’s Road

 

UPPER CHURCH STREET  After the junction with upper and lower Brook Street onto Morda Road in the direction of Welshpool

11     Private 10493 William P Jones, 2 Bn Coldstream Guards (2 Coy).  Also on Salop Road

14       Private 19737 George F (Frederick) Jones, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.   Also given as living at Hurdsman Street on CWGC

17       Private 22116 Frederick Johnson, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  Born in Dudleston. Moved in 1901 to Oswestry to White Hart Inn, his father publican.  1911 living and working in at Wynnstay Hotel, Oswestry.

25      Lance Corporal 18228 Robert M Hughes, 1 Bn Lancashire Fusiliers.  BROTHER – Private 9508 David E (Ernest) Hughes, 2 Bn South Staffordshire Regiment,   Also at Hughes Yard, Llys lane and Orchard Street.

52       Lance Bombardier 292252 Joseph H Davies, 33 Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery.  Born Oswestry. He had lived  Weston Lane. He moved to Liverpool to work as a policeman.

60  Private 10829 Frederick G Davies,  9th (Queen’s Royal) Lancers.  Also at Welsh Walls

74  Private 266507 Joseph W Darlington, 1/1 Bn Kent Cyclists.   Mother living at enlistment papers also at Arthur Street

74    Private 33082 Frank Jones, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.    Family had lived at Plas Wilmot Cottages. Also lived at Holm Lea, Hengoed  after his marriage.

Sergeant 12258 Stanley Williams, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.   Also at 40 Salop Road

 

UPPER LORD STREET off York Street  separated from Lord Street by the Oak Street car park

Private 39395 Bertie Cross, 16 Bn Lancashire Fusiliers.    Bertie’s parents  lived here.
