Arthur Llew Davies was born in Wrexham about 1892 and grew up in Ruabon. He was the second eldest of 5 children with an elder sister, Dorothy, and younger siblings Olive, Richard and William. They lived at Parkside, Ruabon. His father, David, worked as an estate agent’s clerk. He died in 1902. By 1911 his mother Eliza had moved to Oswestry which was her home town. They lived at 3 Victoria Parade* on Roft Street and later on Ferrers Road, Oswestry. Arthur worked as a clerk for Great Western Railways.

He enlisted in Manchester in August 1914 joining the 1/6 Bn Manchester Regiment – a territorial unit based in Hulme, Manchester. Why he joined this regiment is not known. It is possible that it was through his work for GWR – Manchester was one of the railway company’s hubs. He went to Gallipoli with the battalion arriving there in May 1915. He was KIA during the Third Battle of Krithia on 7 August 1915 and was buried at Redoubt Cemetery, Helles. He is also commemorated on the war memorials at St Oswald’s Church and Holy Trinity Church, Oswestry.

* Living in the same house in ‘rooms’ was Second Lieutenant George V (Victor) Blake, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. KIA 03 December 1917, Marcoing British Cemetery
