Edward Delme Evans was born at Llandovery in 1897. He was the youngest son of Edward and Jane Evans. His siblings were Edith, Soloman, Ann him and Dorothy. His father was a clog maker. In 1891 the family were living at Kerry near Newtown, Powys but by 1901 had moved to live at 14 Signal Terrace, Albert Road, Oswestry and by 1911 at 8 Ash Road. Edward worked for Great Western Railway.
Edward enlisted in 1916. At first he joined the KSLI, as Private 31160 but later either transferred or was posted to 2 Bn Welsh Regiment. He went over to France in March 1917. His death is recorded as killed in action on 17 November 1917. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial and he has no known grave. Edward is also commemorated on Guilsfield War Memorial. Edward’s brother, Solman, also served, he was wounded but survived the war.
Edward had only recently returned to the front line following an appendectomy in England. He had been keen to return and had gone back when not fully fit, his operation scar had still not fully healed.
