SALOP ROAD  Road to Shrewsbury although a winding road in its early days after the Black Gate was pulled down it was straightened out. The street name dates from around 1820. 1-4 Belgrave Place are now 15-21 Salop Road

16     Private 44076 John W Whitfield, 2/8 Bn Worcestershire Regiment, 1901 living here also lived at ‘Woodcote’ 3 Victoria Road.

40      Sergeant 12258 Stanley Williams, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. CWGC gives mother address 9 Stewart Road. Also lived at Upper Church Street in 1891 and 3 Middleton Road in 1911.

70    Private 7035 Thomas W Trow, 2 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.    1891/1901 Also lived at 11 Stewart Road,  96, Willow Street and Osborne House, Bailey Street

70       Private 10493 William P Jones, 2 Bn Coldstream Guards (2 Coy).  1911 Also lived at 11 Upper Church Street

72  Private 9724 David Jones, 2 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  Born Llanrhaeadr. In Oswestry lived Upper Church Street.

77 ‘Sandford House‘   Sapper 160668 Edwin E Hancocks, Royal Engineers, att. Royal Flying Corps.  House next to Shell Garage.  Also at Tedsmore Bank, West Felton.

‘Stanley Place’   Captain Joseph T Monkhouse, 6 Bn Durham Light Infantry.  Terrace next to Holy Trinty Church vicarage. Born in Weardale County Durham.

‘Park Issa’  Second Lieutenant James R Whittaker, 6 Bn King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.  Born in Ilkley living with uncle and aunt in 1911.  Park Issa now Vet. surgery.

4   Private 7121 Samuel Richard Lawrence, 1 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  1891 also lived at Llwyn y Maen and Griffithstown.

3  Private 63787 Harry Batty, 3/4 Reserve Bn Welsh Regiment (48 Training Bn).  Also at lived at Roft Street.

11    Private 7035 Thomas W Trow, 2 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.    Also lived at 96, Willow Street, Osborne House, Bailey Street and 70 Salop Road.

9    Sergeant 12258 Stanley Williams, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. CWGC gives this as his mother’s address. Also lived at Upper Church Street, 40 Salop Road and 3 Middleton Road.

22   Private 6679 L Roberts, 2 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers.  Born Llandudno boarding in Oswestry.

22   Corporal 13868 Percy Broster, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.  Percy Broster’s sister, Edith, ran it as a boarding house.

Second Lieutenant BDR (Benjamin Daniel Rowlands) Davies, Royal Flying Corps.   Probably as a boarder – bank worker originally from Swansea.

 

SWAN CRESCENT (Albert Road), Cripplegate east side of Cripplegate

1 Sergeant 12269 Alfred R Smith,6 Bn Shropshire Light Infantry.    &  Private 202054 Frederick S Smith, 11 Bn Manchester Regiment.   Born Bakewell lived also at Gatacre Place, Brynhafod Road.  After his marriage Alfred lived on Loyd Street.

3       Private 6958 Oswald Peters, 2 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.    Also lived at Chapel Street and Vine Cottages, Albert Road.

4        Lance Corporal 200077 Samuel Vaughan, 1/4 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. KIA 28 December1917  and brother Private 17435 Richard Vaughan, 5 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.   Also at Sycarth and Trinity Street

6  (Acting) Lance Sergeant 12280 Alfred E Roberts, 6 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.   Born in Rochdale. Also lived at Llwyn Road.

12       Private 10297 William Coulson, 1 Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Living with his great grandfather Joshua Field

Private 26265 Thomas Jones, 1 Bn Cheshire Regiment.  Also at Parry’s Building, Castle Street and Llys lane.

 

SWAN LANE recently demolished ran behind the lower part of Albert Road joining Beatrice Street to Caer Road

1    Private 19729 Leonard Probert, 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.   Mother of  living here on CWGC.

 

SWEENEY ROAD

‘Rosedale’      Private 59956 John E Bullock, 24 Bn Welsh Regiment.  Home of his parents.
