Frederick Oswald Ellis was born in 1899 at Oswestry he was the third son of 7 children born to Albert and Ellen Ellis with siblings Samuel, Albert, Frank, John, Gladys and Eva. In 1901 they were living at 14 West Street, Oswestry and by 1911 at 5 Gatacre Road. By the end of the war his mother and father had moved to 2 Ferrers Road. His father worked as a steam engine fitter at the railway works. Frederick would work at the Stonehouse Brewery wine & spirits on Church Street.

Frederick was called up as a conscript and was posted to South Lancashire Training and Reserve Battalion stationed at Prees Heath Camp, Whitchurch. After training he was posted to 2 Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, an Irish regiment stationed at Park Hall Camp, Oswestry. Frederick was killed in action on 29 September 1918 near to Terhand, Belgium during the 100 days, Advance in Flanders. The Battalion Ward Diary entries for this time period are missing. His body was not found and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He is also on the war memorials at St Oswald’s and Holy Trinity churches, Oswestry.

Frederick’s elder brother, Albert, also served. He was in the Manchester Regiment and was wounded in November 1918 but survived the war.
