Albert William Phillipson was born at Enfield, Middlesex in 1900, he was the second son of Charles and Dora Phillipson. His father was from Enfield, his mother from West Felton, Oswestry. His siblings were Dora and Charles Albert. In 1901 they were living at 2 Aberdeen Terrace, Brodie Road, Enfield but by 1911 were living at Malt Kiln House, Whittington. His father was a self employed house painter, Albert worked as a motor driver.

Albert enlisted at Shrewsbury in January 1918, age 18. He was posted to 1/4Bn South Lancashire Regiment and went over to France on 1 July 1918. Soon after arrival, on 14 July, he was compulsory transferred to 2/4 Bn Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and joined up with the battalion on 20 July. He was KIA on 28 September 1918 during attacks on the Hindenberg Linei during the last 100 Days Offensive. The battalion was engaged in action at Anneux to capture the Marcoing Line in front of Cambrai. Albert was buried at Anneux British Cemetery and near to where he fell. His headstone reads  ‘Thy will be done’. Albert is also commemorated on Whittington War Memorial.
