Herbert Bertie Price was born on 12 August 1896 in Oswestry. His parents were William and Sarah Eliza Price. In 1901, Herbert was living at 139 Beatrice Street, Oswestry with his mother, younger brother James, his aunt Elizabeth Evans, who was an innkeeper, and cousin Annie Evans, his father was not present. By 1911 Herbert is living at 12 Gate Street, with his mother and brother, again, his father was not present. Herbert was working as a telegraph messenger delivery boy at the Post Office.

Herbert enlisted in King’s Shropshire Light Infantry – probably in late 1914 and joining 9 Bn KSLI. His Medal records show him going over to France on 7 July 1915 and also being posted to 10 Entrenching Battalion – in 1915 these battalions were used as temporary ‘between units’ posting. His record also shows him in 5 Bn KSLI and in 1 Bn KSLI – it is probable that he had been wounded and was posted to 1 Bn KSLI when he returned to duty. He was KIA on 25 September at Morval Ridge during the Somme Offensive. His body was not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. He is also commemorated on Holy Trinity Church War Memorial.
