The ‘Out of Sequence’ Names

Most of the names on the War Memorial are in alphabetical order running down from the top of the left pillar. However there is a group of names, mainly on the right hand pillar, which are out of alphabetical sequence. It is presumed that these names were ‘late entries’ added after the main list had been compiled and were submitted and added after work on the marble plaques had been started or when it had been completed and possibly added when the plaques were in situ.

The names form 2 basic sets –

  • most appear in one block at the end of the right column, however, they too are not in alphabetic sequence suggesting the names were submitted independently rather than in one block
  • the others appear at the top of the right pillar and the bottom of the left pillar – one name (George Albert Corbett) appears at the top of the right pillar and right column of names and outwith the blocks of names suggesting that his was the last name to be added
