William Peate was born in 1894 at Morda. He was the youngest son of John Edwin Lloyd Peate, a corn dealer and miller, from Llanymynech. William had 3 elder brothers and sisters and a younger sister. Their mother was Elizabeth, originally from Selattyn. Two of his brothers would also enlist: brother John would be a casualty; the other served in Salonika and survived. The family lived at Verniew House, Carreghofa near to Llanymynech. By 1911 William had left home and was working on a farm, Ty Gwyn at Llanymynech.

William enlisted at Shrewsbury in 7 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, probably in September 1914 and went over to France with the battalion about a year later on 28 September 1915. He was KIA on 13 November 1916 at Serre during the Somme Offensive. His body was not recovered and his name is recorded on the Thiepval Monument. He is also on Llanymynech War Memorial and at St Oswald’s Church, Oswestry.
